Domain, Hosting, and SSL – How They Impact Your Business

Most agencies like to talk about "packages" for domain, hosting, and SSL as if it’s a given that you should buy everything from the same place. Honestly, I often find this unnecessarily expensive and sometimes downright risky. Let me explain why, in plain Swedish, from a business perspective.

Every company needs a domain – that is, the address of your website. It costs between 120 and 250 SEK per year for a .se domain. It’s almost always worth owning several domains with variations of your name; it costs a few hundred SEK extra but can save you from someone else hijacking your brand.

Hosting is the place where your actual website is stored. The difference between cheap and good hosting is rarely visible the first week, but you notice it when things go wrong. I’ve seen companies pay 12,000 SEK per year for “premium hosting” for a simple WordPress site. Often, that’s overpriced. A normal business website does perfectly fine on 1,500 to 3,000 SEK per year, unless you have special requirements. Don’t pay for more than you need.

SSL is that little padlock in the browser. It means the traffic between the visitor and your website is encrypted. Without SSL, your site will be marked as “not secure” and you lose trust immediately. An SSL certificate costs anywhere from 0 SEK (Let’s Encrypt) up to 2,000 SEK per year for extra security and guarantees. Most companies do just fine with the free option unless you handle sensitive data or payment cards.

So what happens if you’re careless? I’ve seen companies lose important business opportunities because their website was down during a campaign or because Google flagged the site as insecure due to an expired SSL certificate. These aren’t small amounts of money that can be lost. If you get an order worth 50,000 SEK via your website every month, each day of downtime costs you 1,600 SEK in lost business. And there’s no guarantee that customer will come back.

Many pay too much for “all-in-one solutions” and don’t really know where their domain or SSL is registered. This makes it difficult to switch providers. The most important thing is that you yourself own and have control over your domain, hosting account, and SSL. Otherwise, you risk getting stuck with an agency that charges you to move or even complicates the whole process.

Simple advice I usually give at darek.se:

  • Always own domain names and hosting in the company’s name, not the agency’s.
  • Don’t buy “packages” without comparing what you actually get and need.
  • Make sure SSL renews automatically to avoid unpleasant surprises.
  • Get help with the tech, but keep control over logins and contracts.

The most important thing I’ve learned is that domain, hosting, and SSL may sound like technical details, but in practice, they are your company’s digital foundation. If you relax your control over them, you risk both revenue and trust. Don’t be careless with this.
