Technical SEO for Business: How It Works and How to Avoid Pitfalls

#SEO #web development #business

You’ve invested time and money in design, content, and campaigns for your website. Yet, you’re not getting more customer calls. Something feels off. More people should be finding you, right?

Many managers ask me: "Does technical SEO really need to be in the budget? What does it actually mean, and what do we get for our money?"

What does technical SEO mean, and why should we care?

Technical SEO is about how the machinery behind your site works. It’s the stuff that makes Google find, understand, and want to show your website in its search results. It involves things like loading speed, mobile optimization, and ensuring the site is free from technical errors.

If the technical side isn’t working properly, it doesn’t matter how beautiful the site is. Google will pass you over. And customers notice immediately if the site is slow or complicated.

A concrete example: If your page takes 5 seconds to load instead of 2, the number of visitors who stay drops by about 30%. For a site selling services worth 100,000 SEK per month, that could mean losing 30,000 SEK in revenue. Every month.

"The important thing isn’t to push the price down. It’s to buy the right thing, with transparency."

What should you demand from your agency?

This is where many get stuck. Agencies love to throw around terms like "crawl budget," "indexing," and "robots.txt." I say you should demand:

  • A clear report on the site’s technical status (preferably before work begins)
  • A prioritized list of actions and why they matter for your business
  • Explanations of any technical terms so you understand them
  • Price tags and time estimates for each action
  • Measurable effects (e.g., faster loading times, more pages indexed by Google, fewer errors)

If you don’t get this, you don’t know what you’re buying, and it’s hard to justify the investment.

What does it cost not to do technical SEO?

I’ve seen companies miss out on over 100,000 SEK a year in business because Google simply can’t find their most important pages. Or because contact forms don’t work on mobile.

Technical SEO isn’t a one-time cost, but it’s not a black hole either. A well-done technical review and fix usually costs between 10,000 and 40,000 SEK depending on the site’s size. Compare that to what a single new deal is worth to you.

"It’s the kind of investment you often only notice when you don’t make it."

I believe it should be as obvious to check the technology behind your site as it is to service your car. It’s about giving the right conditions to be visible and sell. If you want to know more about what you should demand from your agency, or if your site is at risk, just get in touch and we’ll grab a coffee. I’m passionate about making this understandable, whether it’s about darek.se or anywhere else.
